ABOUT
AMERICAN ROSE THEATRE
SINCE
1996 ... ART began in 1996 in San Diego's North County as a small summer youth theatre program called "Youth Summerstock Theatre" created by our founding artistic director, Loren Salter. By 2003, the company had grown and evolved, and to reflect that we changed our name to American Rose Theatre
OUR MISSION... American Rose Theatre's mission
is to create and produce performing arts that serve and educate the
community. Our youth arm aims to develop and foster talent in children and young
adults who hope to pursue the performing arts in college, and to become working professionals. American
Rose Theatre is an award-winning educational 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization theater company.

IRA SPECTOR, DIRECTOR -SPRING AWAKENING
Ira San Diego directing credits include: Moscow, Diversionary; Into the Woods, Songs for a New World, SDSU;the San Diego Premiere of Zanna, Don’t! in 2009 as well as an Advanced Musical Theatre camp performance this summer with Junior Theatre, 13 with American Rose Theatre last summer, SEUSSICAL with ACT SAN DIEGO, and was the Directing Intern on The First Wives Club,directed by Francesca Zambello at the Old Globe in summer of 2009. Other favorite regional directing credits include: Cabaret (Kennedy Center SSD&C Directing Fellowship Finalist), The Twilight of the Golds, bash: latterday plays, Bethiah Sings (World Premiere), The Wibbly Wobbly, Wiggly Dance That Cleopatterer Did. He also assisted directed the Chicago Premiere of bare (Bailiwick Repertory Theatre) and regional productions of Look Inside and Listen..., The King & I, The Pirates of Penzance. He also loves working in children's theatre and ran a summer camp for kids at the Bailiwick Repertory, where he directed Summer School Rocks!, an original work written by the students.
His favorite acting credits include A Class Act (Ed Kleban, SDSU), Zanna, Don’t! (Zanna; Bailiwick, Chicago Premiere), You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Charlie Brown), Seussical: The Musical (Mr. Mayor), Angels in America (Prior Walter), The Twilight of the Golds (David), Let a Hundred Flowers Bloom (Jake, Diversionary Reading Series, directed by Igor Goldin). Ira is the only student to have earned double BFA degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder, in Musical Theatre and Theatre Performance, where he also graduated Summa Cum Laude. He is currently finishing up his Masters degree at San Diego State University, where he is the first student to graduate from the MFA Musical Theatre program with an emphasis in directing.
PATRICK MARION, MUSIC DIRECTOR -SPRING AWAKENING
has music directed throughout San Diego, including first joined San Diego Junior Theatre - Into The Woods, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Richard Scarry's Busytown, and Dear Edwina. He is an associate artist for Lamb's Players Theatre, and a staff member of San Diego Junior Theatre. He has performed as a musician in shows with Lamb's Players, Cygnet, North Coast Repertory Theatre and J*Company. Patrick teaches private and group music classes around San Diego County

KYRSTEN HAFSO, MUSICAL DIRECTOR / CHOREOGRAPHER - 13
Kyrsten received her MFA in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University where she taught Musical Theatre Dance, Musical Theatre Performance, Voice Lab for Musical Theatre Performance and Voice lessons to undergraduate students. She has a BA in Music with a Vocal performance emphasis from Whitworth University. She has performed and worked with vocal and theater groups in British Columbia and Alberta, Canada, and in Washington State. Before moving to California, Kyrsten taught Hip Hop and Jazz at the Spokane Free School of Ballet in Spokane, WA.
Recent credits include: Choreography - I Love You Because (North Coast Repertory Theatre), High School Musical Benefit (Seattle Children's Theatre), The Musical of Musicals: The Musical (San Diego State), Desire Under the Elms (San Diego State), 2007 Spring Concert (Seattle Children's Chorus). Vocal direction - Birds of Paradise (San Diego State). DIANE
JONES, DIRECTOR (Summer 2009) Diane has worked as a director and choreographer of full stage musicals for over twenty years, and has worked with theatre groups throughout the West Coast. Under her stage name, Diane Douglas, she has worked professionally for theater companies including Starlight Theater and San Diego Lyric Opera. Recently she choreographed, Crazy for You at Starlight Theater. Diane has been teaching theater at Mt. Carmel High School for the last 6 years, where her work has won both State and National awards.
BRIAN HAMMOND, MUSICAL DIRECTOR - SEUSSICAL, DIRECTOR - BROADWAY MAGIG (Summer 2009) Brian's performance credits include roles at the San Diego Rep, Sea World, Legoland and Starlight, as well as touring nationally and internationally with VEE Entertainment's Dragontales Live!. He received the 2008 Aubrey Award for Best Musical Direction, has held teaching positions with the Coronado School of the Arts and Young Audiences of San Diego, and is currently a teaching artist for the La Jolla Playhouse.

JEREMY
LAPP, DIRECTOR (The Music Man).
A native San Diegan, Jeremy has been working in the theatre
business for over 21 years performing in over 100 shows in and around
San Diego County. Favorite stage roles include Beast in Beauty
and the Beast, Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre
Dame, Captain Crew in A Little Princess and
the Lion in The Wizard of Oz. Directing credits include
Alice (Chicago, IL), Oliver, A Christmas
Carol (Inland Theatre Award), Beauty and the Beast,
Godspell, Traditions of Christmas, Once upon a Mattress (NYT
Award), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (NYT
Award) and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. This
is his first experience with ART. He makes his home in Temecula, CA
where he runs a Freelance Graphic Design Business specializing in
Theatre design and advertising.
BETTY
KING, DIRECTOR (Li'l Abner)
Betty is a San Diego
native who started her theater training at San Diego Junior Theatre
under the auspices of Don and Bonnie Ward. She performed and worked
at Starlight prior to attending USC as a Fine Arts Major and Dance
Minor. She graduated with a BS in Education from USC in 1981 and MA
in Education from SDSU in 1990. Fourteen years ago she helped start
C-MENT (Christian Musical Enrichment Theatre) at Penasquitos Lutheran
Church and has been the Director and Choreographer since 2002. She
has also been an assistant director and choreographer at BBYT as well
as at Westview High School. Betty has been blessed with the opportunity
of combining her love of theatre with teaching children and, as a
mother of three daughters, feels strongly that all children should
be taught to sing and dance. For ART, Betty has directed Grease
(ART Youth) and choreographed Oklahoma.
This summer she will direct Li'l Abner for ART Youth.

DOUGLAS
C. SMITH, DIRECTOR
After graduating from UCLA with a degree in Theatre Arts, Doug Smith
went on to direct over 60 productions in educational and community
theatre. After spending 16 seasons at Mt. Carmel High School he was
part of the staff that opened Westview five years ago. His inaugural
production at the Westview Theater was Thornton Wilder’s Our Town.
The California Educational Theatre Association has twice selected
his productions as examples of outstanding high school theatre and
invited them to be showcased at its annual Festival. In the highly
competitive Fullerton College Theatre Festival his students consistently
place in the final rounds, including an entry from his previous production
of Oklahoma! He thanks American Rose for the opportunity
to bring this beloved musical to Plays in the Park with such an incredibly
talented, supportive and hard-working cast, crew, and production staff.
“Territory Folks Do Stick Together!” Doug lives in
his boyhood town of Fallbrook with his wife Bobbi. They are the proud
parents of five children and five grandchildren.
BETTY

Betty is a San Diego

LOREN SALTER, DIRECTOR - CAMELOT and CINDERELLA
Loren Salter was named retired teacher of the year in 2005, after nearly 34 years with the San Diego City Schools, began his career performing with the San Francisco Opera in Carmen, La Boheme and The Daughter Of The Regiment; he received his BA and MA from
California State College in Los Angeles.
While an instructor of music, theater and string orchestra for the San Diego City School (SDCS), he and his students earned many 'Superior' and 'First Place' awards and Salter also distinguished himself as Master Teacher for the District by developing Honors Concerts, as 'Retired Music Educator' for his 'devotion, patience, commitment...inspiring students to the highest levels'.
He has performed as tenor soloist and coach at the Idyllwild School Of Music And The Arts (ISOMATA), with The San Diego Symphony, The Master Chorale and he has toured Europe where he was recognized for his 'vocal artistry and interpretation' in Saltzburg, Austria, and Verona, Italy.
